City Cynicism

Running in the city is definitely different than running in the suburbs and a whole other world away from running on the beautiful back roads of Hillsdale, MI. Oh, how I miss those :(

The green trees and rippling pastures of that beautiful country have now been replaced with gray and glass skyscrapers. They have a distinct allure to them, they show the progress and development of man. Man is truly a wondrous being. The city looks cool especially to the soundtrack of "Sweet Disposition" like in 500 Days of Summer, but when the african drums of "Waka Waka" rumble into my earbuds, my hand automatically jumps to push the "next" button on my ipod in search of a song better suited for bricks and concrete. I've found that buildings don't stir your soul the way natural rock formations might in Arizona. There is something about nature that captures our attention and make us stop, stare and wonder. Wonder what on earth... not on earth... what in this universe, could create that beauty found in nature? Only God.

After my run, I sat on the pier (just 2 blocks from my apartment!) that overlooks the one and only New York City. I couldn't imagine what would keep a person here all their life. The buildings across the river depict a scene from a sci-fi movie... Star Wars perhaps? My little cousins would love to know that they live a quick eight miles from where the Death Star was born. No, not that extreme, but they almost look like animated cutouts pasted on the edge of a river with a hue of brown that lingers just above the surface. Lovely. That same hue is also inhaled while running. It's like in Guatemala, black snot with the future threat of the black lung (ahmm, ahmm).

Wow, was I feeling cynical today. I thought about this post my whole run. I still might have some creativity in me! I thought I lost it long ago when decided to become an econ major! Here is a photo of the view at night. More to come soon of my apartment :)

  1. Oooo! I know exactly what you mean! I went from jogging/biking on a beach to running around in LA. So my soundtrack went from earthy, acoustic music to genres more suitable for city life. I found that nu soul, like Citizen Cope and Alice Smith, provided perfect vibes for the city. Trip hop also blends quite well with concrete. Groups like Lamb and Eskmo really do the trick.

If you like, I can send you some mp3s that you can try out :)

  3. You are such a superb writer. You create vivid pictures and emotions.

I agree. I'm not sure what would keep a person living in the city their entire life. The mountains are so much better.
