Where Did My Creativity Go?

Creativity is something I lack. I used to be creative when I was a kid. I would draw spider webs with glue on black paper, decorate everything and anything with glitter and played bird in the "bird cage" on the play ground. Where did all that go? Kids come up with the most clever games and ideas. As we get older, we get stuck in a rut of repeated ideas; nothing original. Our ideas are just copies of the ideas of others. Rarely do people go through the process thinking through their beliefs, let alone come up with groundbreaking ideas. They accept what they hear.

In the Wall Street Journal today, there is an article title A Box? A Spaceship? What Makes Kids Creative, on developing creativity in children and how modern technology may cause a decrease in creative thinking. To me, this shows how important it is to devote so much time to raising kids. The article encourages parents to question children on their beliefs, ask why, or ask how they might solve a world problem. Questioning urges children to think. Kids need to learn to think for themselves and maybe someday a creative kid will solve the problems of the world.

In one of the studies, children were asked to describe the picture on the left. Common answers included a tornado, a hair a squiggle, but one of the innovative answers was a path of a dizzy bug. Kids are brilliant.
